Brain Drain Syndrome: A Clog in the Wheel of Economic Development of Nigeria

Abstract

Nigerians have been emigrating since the country’s contact with the Western world, the earliest emigration was different from the contemporary type in terms of scope, purpose and its effect on the country. At the initial stage, the scope of emigration was small as people left in trickles; the purpose was for self-development through the acquisition of higher academic degrees and skills from acclaimed educational institutions of the west to boost national development. The effect on the country then was positive as the quality of its human capital was greatly enhanced.
